The provincial exams are a test for all Canadian grade 10, 11, and 12 students. In grade 10, students must take these exams for math, science, and English. In grade 11, students must take an exam for social studies, and in grade 12, students must take an exam only for English. Grade 12 students must maintain a minimum of 80% in English to be eligible for 1st year English courses at any post-secondary institution. If the student is below 80%, he or she must take an English proficiency exam, such as the LPI, EDT, or TOEFL (which Think Out Here can also help to prepare).
The provincial exams test basic skills that should have been taught during the the school year. However, sometimes the amount of information is overwhelming, and students have trouble comprehending or organizing it all. It might be a good idea to brush up on some weaknesses or just learn the strategies of the provincial exams. It is important to remember that even though a tutor can help substantially, time for preparation guarantees success, so book a tutor early. For math and science, usually about a month or two in advance is a good window. However, for English, a month or two may not be enough. English normally takes a lot more time to improve on and prepare for because it is a subjective course.
